Film as Soft Power and Hard Currency: The Sino-Hollywood Courtship |
A total of 17 awards were presented on 28 October at the 14th Global Chinese Universities Student Film and Television Festival award ceremony organised by the Academy of Film of the School of Communication.
This year’s Golden Award went to Ng Wing-yan from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for her entry Walking on Water. Wong Hoi-yin from the Open University of Hong Kong won the Highly Commended prize for Monkey Business. Another Hong Kong Polytechnic University student, Rony Kong, won the Best Drama Award for Horizon and Huang Jingya from Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages in Taiwan won the Best Director Award for Drama with The Forgetter.
Chen Nan, a fresh graduate of Master of Fine Arts in Film, Television and Digital Media programme, won the Best Script Award for Drama in both the Cross category and Local category for Comin’ for to carry me home, while her fellow Lee Pik-shan won the Best Documentary Award in the Local category for Blind.

Officiating at the award presentation ceremony were Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the HKSAR Government Mr Edward Yau, Vice Chairman of Centum Charitas Foundation Mr Bonnie Wong, Chairman of the Council and Court of HKBU Mr Cheng Yan-kee, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU Professor Roland Chin, Dean of School of Communication Professor Huang Yu, Director of the Academy of Film of the School of Communication Professor Eva Man, and Associate Director of the Academy of Film of the School of Communication Mr Man Shu-sum.
The 14th Global Chinese Universities Student Film and Television Festival was co-organised by DC Foundation and Centum Charitas Foundation. This year, 105 entries were received from 56 institutions in Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the UK, the US, France, Germany, Russia, Bulgaria, Australia, India, Malaysia and South Korea to compete for the 17 awards.
