Tsang Po-yi, a student of the Academy of Film (AF) of the School of Communication (Higher Diploma in Creative Film Production, Year 2) won the Best Director Award for her short film Handmade Bread in the 3rd Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Micro Film Cultural Exchange Week.
The short film follows the main female character and her boyfriend as they attempt to stop her father from closing down their traditional Hong Kong bakery by creating new types of bread with the master baker. Throughout the process, there were numerous conflicts between the duo from different generations. Luckily, the bakery could be saved in the end.
Po-yi stated that Handmade Bread shows the interactions among different generations in Hong Kong. The young and old can accomplish their own goals after a period of adjustment. She said the biggest challenge in producing the film was to find a traditional bakery for the shooting location. Thankfully, with the support of a group of good friends and classmates, the whole team finished producing the film.
Upon receiving further recognition for Handmade Bread, Po-yi expressed her gratitude towards her film teachers for their support in this endeavour. She thanked Mr Norman Chan, Lecturer of AF, for his continued support and encouragement, and paid special tribute to Mr Tommy Wai, a part-time Lecturer of AF, for assisting with sound mixing, as well as Mr Francis Ko, a part-time Lecturer of AF, for his guidance. She said she will continue to work hard to produce better films in the future.
