Chinese Journalism Year 4 students Lee Tsz-ying and Lau Tsz-lam won the Merit Prize in the Tertiary – Radio, Television & Video (Chinese) Category of the Human Rights Press Awards with their news report entitled “Growing up with homosexual parents”.

Tsz-ying said that some Hong Kong people worried that same-sex parenting would have a negative impact on children. However, Tsz-ying and Tsz-lam doubted if the key to raising happy, successful children lies in the parents’ sexual orientation. In light of this, they interviewed two families with same-sex parents to know more about their family life and pattern of parenting.

Tsz-ying added that they are extremely honoured to gain recognition from the judges. As same-sex marriage is not recognised in Hong Kong, it was a challenge to identify interviewees who were willing to tell their stories in front of the camera. Tsz-ying and Tsz-lam expressed special gratitude to the interviewees for the latter’s trust and help which enabled them to portray the lives of those taking the road less travelled. Tsz-ying promised they will work hard to produce more news stories and become professional journalists in the future.
